The Aussie Bird Count, organized by BirdLife Australia, stands as one of the country's most significant citizen science initiatives, drawing participation from a diverse demographic each October.

This event encourages Australians of all ages and experience levels to engage in outdoor activities that foster a better understanding of local avian species, while contributing valuable data for conservation research. Participants are invited to register at aussiebirdcount.org.au and download the dedicated Aussie Bird Count app.

During the designated period, individuals are encouraged to dedicate approximately 20 minutes per session to observing, counting, and recording bird sightings through the app. The flexible format allows counts to be conducted from various locations—be it at home, school, in a backyard, or within local parks and outdoor areas of their choice.

With each session requiring only a brief time commitment, the event provides an accessible opportunity to promote outdoor engagement and ecological awareness. The app’s built-in Bird Finder tool assists users in identifying unfamiliar species, thereby enriching the observational experience.
